Does frequent charging harm the battery life of smartphones?

Some believe that charging a phone regularly is OK, while others say that it is not a healthy practice since you should charge your phone when it reaches a specific percentage. There are other misconceptions that add to the uncertainty regarding whether it is safe to constantly keep the battery over 80% or to charge overnight.

Most smartphones use either Li-Poly or Li-ion batteries, which deteriorate after a certain number of recharges. So, how many times should a smartphone be charged or when is the optimal time to charge a phone battery? Again, there are several viewpoints on the best time to charge a smartphone battery.

Earlier mobile phones were simple and the battery used to work for long hours as there was hardly any kind of multitasking Apps but with the introduction of smartphones, the battery capacity has also increased to give power to the large touchscreen and perform all sorts of multitasking Apps which drain the battery quickly. There are many apps that consume a significant amount of battery power, which is why we need to charge the battery at regular intervals.

Typically, when the battery percentage falls below 50%, we become concerned and feel compelled to charge it immediately, which may be a healthy habit in the long run, but it does not imply that we must continue to charge the battery on a regular basis.

When the battery percentage in most of the latest smartphones approaches 20%, it begins to display a notice to either charge the mobile or use power-saving mode, which also indicates that if we continue to use the battery below 20% charge, it may take energy to operate the Apps. However, according to the Samsung Company, the battery must be charged properly, and as previously said, most mobile batteries are Li-ion and have a longer life if charged properly.

How to charge a mobile battery properly?

Charging properly means that we should avoid the battery reaching the level below 20% level and make sure to keep it above 50% as it shortens the life of the battery. Hence, if the level goes below 20% you may need to change frequently and it may not last for long hours because in the long run, the battery capacity would decrease.

Huawei suggests that it is better not to keep the battery level below 30% and it should be between 30% to 70% range to have long battery life. In other words, it is again better to keep the battery level near 50% but not always fully charged.

Is it ok to do overnight charging on a mobile?

There is a mechanism in the mobile that auto cuts the charging when it reaches 100% levels but if the battery is already at 100% and still, the charger is connected then it may lower the battery life as per the Samsung.

Still, there are too many other things on which the life of the battery depends like extreme changes in temperature and obviously the charging habits. With time these chemical batteries also age and start holding less charge over a period of time.

Anyways, there are no studies conducted so far to find the impact of charging a battery overnight but in case your mobile is older than one year then there are chances that the battery starts depleting quickly as compared to the initial days when you bought it.

Now, we know about the optimum battery levels at which the smartphones should be kept but if you are still thinking about the frequency of charging the mobile then all we can say is that it is better to charge the mobile once to attain either 100% charge or near to it and avoid charging it multiple times a day especially when it drops below 50% because it takes lots of efforts to reach the higher levels of charge as compared to the scenario where you already have charging above 50% or near to it.

How frequently should a smartphone be charged?

As mentioned above most of the smartphone batteries are Li-ion which have a long life and these have a lifespan of 300 – 500 charge cycles. Hypothetically a charge cycle of the battery is when you have used the complete charge from 100% to 0%. But practically we can say that when it reaches 20% then it almost completes one charge cycle. Hence, always try to keep the battery levels above 20% and near 50%.

If possible try to charge the battery at once because when you charge the battery from 0% to 100% or 20% to 100% it strains the battery.

However, to avoid reaching the maximum number of charge cycles it is recommended that you should always keep at a mid-level charge as it would keep it in a healthy state and you can use it for a longer period otherwise you have to replace the battery.

There are some studies where it is mentioned that you should keep the battery charged near to 80% as going beyond it also strains the battery.

How to charge the battery properly?

Never use unbranded chargers and USB cables as these strain the battery and there are chances that due to improper supply of power the battery might explode. So, always use the charger which comes with the smartphone or not use the cheap version of the charger.

Do not wait for the battery to reach 0% and always make sure to keep at least 50% charging percentage and on the same hand do not worry about keeping it at 100% level as it also has adverse effects.

Do not let your smartphone overheat and it would be better to keep it cool because the external heat also adversely impacts the battery life. Never leave your smartphone in extreme weather conditions like sunlight or cold temperatures.

Do not go for overnight charging even if there is an auto-cut feature that stops charging once it reaches the 100% level. It is always better to avoid overcharging. Always unplug the charger when the charging is done.

Avoid playing games while charging the battery because during charging some heat is generated and when you are playing games at that time also some amount of heat is generated.

Final words

There are no hard and fast rules about how frequently a smartphone should be charged. We conducted research and discovered that never let your smartphone battery drop below 20% since this indicates that one charge cycle has been completed, and the battery’s lifetime is around 300 to 500 cycles. The second charging rule is to maintain the battery about 50 percent charged and to prevent repeated charging to achieve the 100 percent level. The ideal percentage level of a Li-ion battery is 20% to 80%.

There is no proof that frequent charging reduces the battery life but if you do something more often then it definitely have some effect. It is recommended to keep the charging level not so slow because it will take more to charge and may impact the charging capacity in longer run.
